Icca is our favorite babysitter. We miss her. She had the audacity to get married and move on with her life. Can you believe the nerve? She babysat for us for about 3 years. Her sisters replaced her for about a year, and then Arianna and Samantha got old enough to do a little tending. I think we've officially moved out of the needing a babysitter stage of life... and I can't say I'm sad about that. There's a little more freedom when you can ask your daughter to babysit last minute. And even though she doesn't like that, a little bribe sweetens the deal and we're all pretty happy.
When Icca got married, I wanted to give her something to tell her how special she was to us. We love her dearly. I would love for my daughters to turn out like her... and that's one of the reasons we hired her so often. She was a good example to our girls.
Anyway, having lived in San Diego all her life, and upon getting married, heading to Powell, Wyoming, I figured she'd need a little warmth, so we knitted her a hat on the Knifty Knitter, and gave her a pair of my favoritest mittens of all time. They have fingers in them like gloves, but not the tips, so your fingertips are still usable. Then they have a little "hat" that can fold over your fingers. They're kind of a glove/mitten. They're surely the best. Sorry they don't match Icca, function over form this time.
In San Diego, we don't really get the colors of the seasons that I miss from Utah. But if you really look around on just the right day, it's there. After Icca got married, we were walking away from the temple, when Arianna, who knew I was in a quandry about what to give Icca for a wedding gift, looked around and said, "How about we give her some leaves from today!" And so we did.
On the back is a quote about how our lives change with the seasons, but it's all good, etc. etc. I think I'll try to find that quote. We told her that we hoped that she would be able to see the beauty in every season of life. I think it turned out quite pretty and special to boot.
We love you and miss you, Jessica!

Hey Lori!
ReplyDeleteWhat a thoughtful idea! Both the leaves and the warm stuff....but I'm mostly talking about the leaves.
I LOVE IT! Autumn is my favorite season and I just might copy your decor idea
You've just got to tell me how you did it.
How ironic! When Lorna announced an October wedding, I thought about something she said on her mission about how unbelievable the Fall colors were in D.C. I thought it would be wonderful if I could collect leaves on that day to give to her, but I know how to preserve them. I have collected leaves in years past and they turned brown after a little while (couple months) so I didn't collect any for her. She got married during what is called "peak week." That is the week when the most leaves are at their most colorful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I have always thought the leaves you have framed in your kitchen were very pretty. YOu mananged to give the entire package, some she needed and more importantly something with a personal touch. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog!! Can I tell you that I didn't realize how amazingly talented and creative you are? I love your gift! And cheap to boot!! I am taking notes ...
ReplyDeleteBTW - we'll miss you tremendously!! And I need your french bread recipe before I move. :)
I'm glad you keep a blog! Are you moving? If you want to I would love for you to email me! mama4joy at hotmail dot com :-D
ReplyDeleteThat was truely thoughtful Lori, I am always trying to do things like that because the thought really does count most. It builds relationships and preserves fond memories.
ReplyDeleteNow, how do you preserve leaves like that?!
